Updated 1/13/2023: Adderall shortage 2023: FDA updates on dosages & pharmaceutical companies

On October 12th, we published an article about the nationwide shortage of Adderall. It just so happened that later that day, the FDA made a new announcement:

There is an official shortage for the immediate release (IR) formula of Adderall, or amphetamine-dextroamphetamine salts.

Previously, there had only been a shortage of the extended release (XR; ER) formula, with speculation of a low supply for the IR tablets.

Now that's it's official official, we wanted to provide the latest information on the shortage.

2022 Adderall shortage details

Extended release (XR; ER) Adderall

As of October 14, 2022, the only extended release that is available nationwide is the 7.5 mg dosage.

The remaining dosages (5 mg, 10 mg, 12.5 mg, 15 mg, 20 mg, and 30 mg) are on backorder.

This means that they are mostly unavailable across the country and in very low supply in select areas. The dosages have their own unique dates of expected recovery to pharmacies, ranging from October 2022 to December 2022.

Extended release dosage availability

5 mg: on backorder; expected to be in stock by the end of November 2022

7.5 mg: available

10 mg: on backorder; expected to be in stock by the end of November 2022

12.5 mg: on backorder; expected to be in stock by the end of October 2022

15 mg: on backorder; expected to be in stock by the end of November 2022

20 mg: on backorder; expected to be in stock by the end of November 2022

30 mg: on backorder; expected to be in stock by the end of December 2022

Immediate release (IR) Adderall

As of October 14, 2022, most of the dosages of Adderall IR are still available.

However, they are likely to be fully out of stock soon, which is why the FDA made the IR formula an official addition to the nationwide shortage list. The only dosage that is officially on the list is 10 mg, while the supply of the remaining dosages are being closely monitored.
